What Is an OCI Card?

The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card is an official document issued by the Government of India to people of Indian origin who are now foreign citizens. Though some people mistakenly call it OIC or think it means dual citizenship, OCI is not the same as dual citizenship. India does not allow dual citizenship. Instead, the OCI card offers a set of long-term rights and privileges for eligible applicants. If you hold the OCI card, also known as OCI status, you can travel to India without a visa, live or study there long-term, and enjoy many benefits similar to an NRI (Non-Resident Indian).

Who Can Apply for the OCI status?

You may be eligible for the OCI card if:

Indian citizens are not eligible to apply for OCI. Only foreign passport holders can apply.

NRI vs PIO vs OCI – Understanding the Difference

If you’ve been confused by the terms NRI (Non-Resident Indian), PIO (Person of Indian Origin), and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India), you're not alone. These terms are often used incorrectly. Let’s clear it up:

Term Who It Refers To? Indian Passport? Visa-Free Travel? Can Get OCI?
NRI Indian citizen living abroad ✅ Yes ✅ Yes (still Indian) ❌ No
PIO (Merged into OCI) ❌ No Used to be yes ✅ Converted to OCI
OCI Foreign citizen of Indian origin ❌ No ✅ Yes Already holds OCI
In 2015, the Government of India merged the PIO card into the OCI card. If you still hold a PIO card, you must convert it to OCI. 🔗 Want to know which category you fall into? [Read the full comparison here]

How our agency can help you in applying for your OCI status?

Applying for the OCI card can feel complicated. Forms, document uploads, photo rules, courier instructions — every small detail matters. If anything goes wrong, it could delay your application or even get it rejected. We take care of all this for you. Here’s how we help:

  1. You Fill a Simple Form: We collect your details to understand your case. Based on this, we decide exactly what’s needed.
  2. You Receive a Personalized Checklist: We send you a clear list of documents, sample filled forms, and help with photo and signature requirements. This includes embassy-specific rules (like those in the USA, UK, or Australia).
  3. We Fill Your OCI Application Online: We fill the official form on the ociservices.gov.in site for you and guide you if your consulate requires you to upload documents to VFS Global or similar platforms. Prefer to fill it yourself? You can. Our samples and instructions will still help.
  4. You Print, Sign, and Send the Documents: We guide you on how to send your application to the correct address — whether VFS in the USA or CKGS in other regions.
  5. We Stay in Touch Throughout the Process: We track the progress, update you on each step, and guide you if there are requests from the embassy or courier services.
